What is a Magazine Advert?
A magazine advert is something which promotes a music artist, and promotes there next upcoming album or single. Magazine music adverts follow the same theme as the album, usually consisting of the same picture as on the album cover. Magazine music adverts consist of usually a picture of the artist typically the same as the album, and a sometimes different quotes from different music channels, casting it as 'the best song ever' or 'best song from the album.
The Magazine advert will also usually contain lists of the most popular songs off from the album, this makes the album stand out more to customers because they will recognise these songs the most and would assume the album was worth the money. A new single just released from the album may also be featured on the magazine advert, this is so the fans and consumers can familierise themselves with the artist and the album they are trying to promote.
Below you can see a slideshow, showing many examples of different magazine artists, from a wide range of different genres, including pop, alternative and rock, these examples show you the different colour schemes, fonts and images different artists use based on their genre.

What are the dimensions of a magazine advert?
The dimensions of a magazine advert can vary dramatically, based on the artists budget or popularity. For example, however one of the most common sizes a magazine advert is A4 which is a normal magazine size. The dimensions for this are with bleed 303mm x 216mm. Other sizes include; half page landscape which is 130mm x 190mm, half page portrait which is 270mm x 93mm, quarter page portrait 133mm x 93mm and also quarter page landscape which is 190mm x 65mm. There are smaller sizes, however these are not regulary used by music artists, because the advert would not stand out enough to be worth while.
All these sizes depend on the funding the artist has from the record label for advertising and marketing and also mainly depends on their popularity.
A magazine advert tends to be laid out in a way which catches the consumers attention. This is done by usually having a large eye catching title at the top of the page, consisting of the artists name, and the album name. A consumers natural line of vision will guide them right across the page, usually leading them to a picture of the artist which is taking up most of the advert. To the left you can see a diagram showing a persons natural line of vision, going from left to right and diagonally across the page. The bottom line of the advert will contain information about the album, tracks included and also information about the realease date, and where the album can be sourced from, such as HMV, or itunes.
The image to text ratio of a magazine advert is normally around 60:40. This is because the advert needs to be eye catching to the consumers, with large images and texts achieving this. Colours are also important. Colours tend to set the style and genre of the artists music, making the consumer aware of the type of music they have to offer. However the colours and images need to compliment each other in order for the advert to have appeal to the consumers and make them 'excited' to buy the new album this artist has to offer.

How do magazine adverts benefit the artist?
There are many ways in which a magazine advert can benefit the artist because magazine adverts are accessed by a much larger range of people, from all ages, including children, to the elderly, this widens the artists popularity and opens them up to a lot more people. A magazine advert can also be kept for a long period of time, for example a magazine advert can be cut out and used as a poster, prolonging the promotion of the artist. In a family, a magazine would probably be passed around for everyone to look at, meaning a lot more people would see the poster, promoting the artists music. A artist which has a lot of funding behind them would probably advertise in a well known magazine, in the UK this could be a magazine or newspaper, such as The Sun, or Heat, which are read by a wide range of consumers of all ages.
