Creating a record label

During these lessons we came up with a wide range of different record labels which we could consider using for our own. Once we had came up with these different record labels I went round the sixth form asking different people which record label they liked the best. As well as letting them choose their favourite record label from the different 6 to the left, I also asked them why they liked the record label, allowing them to expand their anwser. We tried to create a wide variety of different labels, ranging from ones which would be suitable for our chosen genre and ones which may not suit our genre as well. This gave us a good idea about which record label we will pick for our own label.
Once I got back to the classroom we discussed my findings, picking the most suitable record label from the choices which are on the left.
One of the areas of our coursework is to produce a record label for our music video, showing that it is produced by somebody.
The first thing we had to do when it came to creating our record label is choose a name. As a group we came up with some different ideas which we could consider using. We came up with PHONIC RECORDS, AMITY RECORDS and AURORAL RECORDS. We all chose the names based on the fact that we thought they fitted well with the genre of music we are concentrating on as well as the fact they fit well with the music industry feel. My personal favourite was PHONIC because I thought it sounded the most professional, and would fit the music industry a lot better. However to pick a name fairly we decided to get some audience feedback from the 3 different names, asking different people around the sixth form asking them which they thought was their favourite name. This would make choosing the name a lot more unbiased. To the left you can see our results, showing that Phonic was the popular choice.

From looking at all our audience feedback for our record labels, we found that the label with the black record, accompanied by the red headphones was the most popular. It was also the one with the curved writing which was the overall winner. We then decided that this would be our chosen record label, we thought this would be best because it means our choice is a lot more unbiased, compared to just chosing our favourite. Even though I like our chosen record label and that it fits the music industry very well, I just think that it does not fit our actual genre of acoustic singer songwriter very well, with us choosing a different more natural logo to probably be more effective.
The only thing which was requested to be changed within the logo was the writing, making it straight instead of curved, making it look more professional.
Kathryn edited the final record label, taking in the feedback which I collected, changing the curved writing to straight and also lowering the headphones. This made the logo look more compact. Overall Kathryn did a very good job in finalising the finished record label.
Researching Record Labels

To the left you can see a powerpoint presentation I have created showing some independant research I did looking into different record labels. I concentrated on looking at a variety of both international and British based record labels, some which are highly famous and others which are more independent. I also look more closely at the different logos, looking at the different elements which we could include in our own record label, looking at the colour schemes and font styles they have chosen, looking at what would suit our genre of music best.
