3 Types of Music Video
There are 3 different kinds of music video, which a band or artist may use to promote thier single or album, which is the main purpose of a music video. Many music videos are also used to portray a direct or indirect message to the viewer, connecting with the audience, making them want to buy the whole album.
Below I am going to explain in more detail what the 3 different kinds of music video are, and what genre of music are usually associated with these kinds of music videos, and well as showing examples.
IPerformance:
A performance music video is the most common type of music video. These usually tend to have the artist or band, singing the song to a large, loud and enthusiastic crowd, in a concert like setting. This is to make viewers of the music video, interested in band, and excited as to what their concerts would be like in real life, it gives them a sense of the concert expierience. The type of genre which normally has music videos like this are Rock, this because they like to show the hectic, rowdy and loud concerts they normally have. Performance videos were mainly seen in the 70's and 80's and were popular with many rock bands such as Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses.
Narrative:
Narrative music videos, are videos which tell a story alongside the song. They may show a sequence of events, and are mainly telling a love story or tragic event which may happen. Narrative music videos are mainly popular with the Pop genre, with many artists making narrative music videos, such as Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, who are very well known for their narrative music videos.
However other genres such as Rock and Country also use narrative music videos to promote thier songs. To the left you can see an example of a narrative music video, fall out boys 'Sugar we're goin down', which shows a love story
Conceptual:
Conceptual music videos are made to create a mood rather than portray a story, like narrative music videos. Conceptual music videos, may also have the possibility of multiple meanings, which be metaphors for other parts of the music video or other music videos which they have made in the past. They can also be described as a type of art, or to have a poetic form.
The type of genre which normally has conceptual music videos are pop and alternative kinds of music.
To the right you can see an example of a conceptual music video, the red hot chilli peppers 'by the way', which is about a taxi driver highjacking the lead singer Anthony Kiedis. This does not have any links to the actual lyrics of the song, this is what a conceptual music video tends to portray.
