Choosing an artist...
On these lessons the aim was to pick our chosen unsigned artist to use for our music video. As a group we decided that we wanted to use an acoustic singer songwriter artist, someone who sound quite light hearted and the songs had a clear meaning to them. On the first lesson, when looking on Youtube, Felicity found Kirsty Lowless, singing her original song, 'Miss Me'. From listening as a group we thought this song would be perfect for our music video, because we portray a lot of ideas, fitting to the genre in a narrative music video, we also had a lot of ideas for setting and mise en scene. However from looking into contacting Kirsty we found that she was infact already signed to a small record label called 'PopShack'. Popshack helped unsigned artists to find fame and potenitally become signed to a major record label. They do this by putting on events showcasing the artists, helping them become more recognisable. Because Kirtsy was already signed to Popshack it meant that we could not use her for our music video. Eventhough we thought she was very good and her song could make a good music video we continued looking to see if we could find even better artsits to use for our music video.
The next artist we came across was Dodie Clark. This was one of her original songs called 'Adored by him'. This was more of an example of a slower paced song which would be more difficult to make into a music video, and would be something which we would probably find a challenge when ot comes to lip syncing. The good thing about Dodie was that she was an orignal unsigned artist, who had not had any connections with other artists.
This song divided the group a lot because half of us was against the song and half of us was for the song. Annabelle and Kathryn thought this song could be very effective and thought the lyrics could be used within the video to create a narrative, whilst myself and Felicity thought that there was not enough of a rthym to the song, and it would have been something which would have needed a strong narrative to go with it, with no elements of a performance which is what we wanted in our video to start with.
Overall we decided not to use Dodie Clark because once again we felt as though we could find a more effective song to use for our video.
We started worry about not finding an artist to use, so our teacher told use about 'Freds House', who are a local folk rock band consisting of 5 members. They are located in cambridge, making them a local choice for us to use. One of their most stand out, critically acclaimed songs is 'Fine Life' which can be seen to the left of this text box. Another thing which made Freds House stand out to us was the fact that they were an unsigned band. When contacting them we found that they were linked to their own record label which they set up themselves, this was good for us because it meant we would be able to use them. We contacted Freds Houses, enquiring to see if we could infact use one of their songs. They too awhile to reply to our email, however when they did reply, we found out that they would be more than willing to let us use one of their songs. However whilst looking at Freds houses music, we came across another artist called Christain Smith...
